KymiRing is a modern, purpose-built facility near Kouvola in southeastern Finland, designed and built to FIA Grade 1 and MotoGP homologation standards, making it, with minor safety modifications, technically eligible to host Formula 1. The full Main Circuit is 4.65 km with 18 turns, but the site is genuinely multi-configuration: it also offers separate East and West circuit layouts, plus a dedicated tarmac-and-gravel rallycross circuit, giving it more format flexibility than most European road courses. Despite its high-spec design, the venue has never hosted the headline MotoGP event it was built for, and its short operating history has been dominated by financial and construction disputes rather than sustained top-tier racing.

Events and race weekends

KymiRing's most significant events to date are motocross and rallycross rather than the circuit racing it was originally built for: the venue hosted its first FIM World Championship round, the MXGP of Finland motocross event, in July 2025, and signed a three-year agreement to host FIA World Rallycross Championship rounds from 2025. The MotoGP Finnish Grand Prix the circuit was purpose-built for in 2017 has never taken place, having been repeatedly postponed for construction delays, the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical concerns before being dropped from the calendar entirely.

Getting there and parking

KymiRing sits near Tillola in Iitti municipality, close to the city of Kouvola in southeastern Finland, roughly 140 km northeast of Helsinki. Most visitors drive from Helsinki or fly into Lappeenranta, with the circuit reachable via Highway 6; public transport connections directly to the circuit gates are limited outside major event days.

History of KymiRing

Built for a Grand Prix that never came

KymiRing was conceived as a purpose-built, FIA Grade 1 and MotoGP-homologated racing facility near Kouvola in southeastern Finland, with organisers securing a five-year MotoGP contract in July 2017 for a Finnish Grand Prix intended to end the country's four-decade absence from the world championship calendar. The circuit opened in August 2019 after extensive construction, but the planned MotoGP debut was pushed back repeatedly: first by construction and homologation delays, then by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, and finally by geopolitical concerns tied to the circuit's proximity to Russia and its Russian financial backing, which contributed to the race's cancellation before it was ever run.

Financial collapse and administration

Behind the scenes, KymiRing's developer accumulated substantial unpaid construction debts, and in mid-2022 two construction companies filed a bankruptcy petition against the venue over claims totalling roughly €634,000. The financial crisis effectively halted the circuit's push toward top-tier motorsport and left its long-term future in doubt for several years, even as the physical facility remained largely complete and technically capable of hosting elite racing.

New ownership and a modest revival

In February 2024, Hungarian company TRP Hungary acquired KymiRing, and the venue began rebuilding its event calendar around disciplines other than its original MotoGP ambition. In 2025 it hosted its first FIM World Championship event, the MXGP of Finland motocross round, and began a three-year hosting agreement for the FIA World Rallycross Championship on its dedicated rallycross circuit. The site continues to run public track days and driving experiences on its various circuit configurations, operating as an active but still-recovering facility whose original Grand Prix ambitions remain unrealised.
