Mercedes Baffled: George Russell Plagued by Persistent Energy Deployment Issues

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team engineers are diligently working to unravel a recurring mystery surrounding George Russell’s car: a persistent energy deployment deficit that has significantly hampered his performance, most notably at the recent Belgian Grand Prix and previously at Silverstone. The problem manifests as a noticeable lack of straight-line speed, leaving Russell at a disadvantage compared to his teammate.

A Puzzling Performance Deficit Plagues Russell’s Campaign

The issue became glaringly apparent at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, where a distinct top speed disparity was observed between Russell and his teammate during practice sessions and, to a lesser extent, in qualifying. While his teammate secured pole position, Russell found himself lining up fourth on the grid, struggling to match the pace on the straights.

Russell himself voiced his frustration, revealing his intense focus on the problem. “My whole focus for the last 36 hours has been on straight-line speed,” he explained, prior to the Spa race. “It hasn’t been focusing on the set-up, the tyres or anything, because we’re all trying to solve what is going on. Even on my last lap, for some reason I lost another tenth and a half to myself, just on the straight. You’re watching on your steering wheel, just losing speed when you’re full gas on the straight. You feel powerless. We don’t know what’s going on. I don’t think it’s the power unit, to be honest. But there’s something slowing us down in the straights.”

Mercedes Scrutinizes System for Root Cause

Following an initial appearance of the issue at Silverstone, Mercedes’ deputy technical director, Simone Resta, confirmed that the team’s investigation initially pointed towards a difference in driving style as a major contributor. Russell conscientiously adapted his throttle application and driving approach for Spa, yet the problem persisted, albeit not to the same degree.

“We’ve had some problems with the deployment on George’s car that we really need to understand and bottom out going to the next event,” Resta stated. “All that started in Silverstone, where we started to see some deployment differences between our two cars. We’ve been doing a lot of analysis, and we came to the conclusion that one of the major contributors was related to a difference in driving style between the two cars. George studied that quite a lot and was able to change it and adapt going into Spa, but still, we can still see some difference in the deployment between these two cars.”

Resta highlighted the complexity of the current regulations, noting that teams are still in a learning phase. “We are working with a brand-new set of regulations, we are just at the 10th race over these regulations, and we are still struggling to understand every single contributor,” he added. “We are not the only ones in this condition because we can see that many teams are still learning and adapting to this new regulation, so we’ll do our best to really find out what’s the main reason for this difference and to be best prepared for Hungary.”

Unrelated Software Glitch Compounded Spa Frustration

Adding to Russell’s woes at Spa was an unrelated software glitch that affected both Mercedes cars’ starts. Both drivers experienced a significant loss of electrical energy on the Kemmel Straight after Turn 1, leaving them vulnerable to the chasing pack. This issue particularly impacted Russell, who was immediately under pressure from rivals.

The energy depletion played a contributing role in the unfortunate contact between George Russell and Lewis Hamilton at Turn 5, which ultimately forced Russell to retire from the race. Resta confirmed the software fault: “Essentially we’ve been having a software issue with both our cars, which basically meant that we hit the harvesting limit at Turn 1. Basically, we had a boost issue on both cars from Turn 1 to Turn 5. This has affected both George and [his teammate] and we’ve seen both of them losing ground after a good start.”

As the F1 season progresses, Mercedes faces the critical task of diagnosing and rectifying these complex issues to ensure Russell can extract the full potential from his machinery at upcoming races, starting with the Grand Prix in Hungary.
