Atlanta Motor Speedway, now branded EchoPark Speedway under a sponsorship deal, is a 1.54-mile quad-oval that was dramatically reshaped in 2022: steeper 28-degree banking and a narrower racing surface were built to deliberately recreate superspeedway-style pack racing, more like Daytona or Talladega than the intermediate track it used to be. That change turned Atlanta into one of only a handful of NASCAR ovals under 2 miles where cars run in tight drafting packs, producing green-flag passing and multi-car incidents unlike anything the track saw in its earlier decades. A separate infield road course, known as the Roval, weaves oval sections together with a purpose-built infield layout and is used for select events, while a small legends-car oval sits on part of the frontstretch.

Getting there and parking

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is roughly 25-30 minutes from the speedway, making Atlanta one of the easiest major-market tracks to fly into. The speedway sits just off US Highways 19/41 and near Interstate 75 in Hampton, Georgia, south of the city.

Parking

Free parking is available in grass lots across the more than 850-acre property, with a directed, color-coded lot system (Purple, Blue, Red, Green) based on which road you approach from.

Follow the posted directional signage for your approach road exactly; the color-coded lot system moves large crowds efficiently but can be confusing if you deviate from the suggested route.

Hampton and nearby McDonough have a growing hotel base close to the track, while the far larger supply of Atlanta, about 30 minutes north, covers overflow demand for both Cup Series weekends. Booking ahead is recommended given Atlanta's status as a major media market with strong race weekend attendance.

History of Atlanta Motor Speedway

Early years

Atlanta Motor Speedway opened in 1960 as a 1.5-mile oval built to bring top-level stock car racing to the Southeast's largest market. Like many tracks of its era it went through ownership changes and periods of financial difficulty before Bruton Smith's Speedway Motorsports acquired it in 1990, investing in expanded grandstands and infrastructure that grew the venue into a modern, larger-capacity facility through the 1990s and 2000s.

Reconfiguration and rebrand

The track's defining recent chapter came in 2022, when Speedway Motorsports rebuilt Atlanta's racing surface, steepening the banking to 28 degrees and narrowing the track to deliberately mimic the drafting-pack dynamics of Daytona and Talladega on a much shorter 1.54-mile oval. The change was one of the most significant physical reconfigurations any active NASCAR track has undergone and immediately altered the character of racing there, producing tightly bunched fields and frequent late-race drama. In 2025 the speedway adopted the name EchoPark Speedway under a multi-year sponsorship and naming-rights agreement, while continuing to be widely referred to by its longtime name, Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Present day

Today the speedway hosts two NASCAR Cup Series weekends a year on its reconfigured oval, alongside a Roval road course layout used for select events and a legends-car track for grassroots racing. Its status as a 'superspeedway in miniature' has made it one of the more debated and closely watched venues on the modern NASCAR calendar, and its proximity to Atlanta keeps it one of the most accessible major tracks in the Southeast.
