Vice-Champion Jacob Abel Set for Indy NXT Return at Portland

Abel Motorsports has confirmed that 2024 Indy NXT vice-champion Jacob Abel will return to the grid for Round 14 of the championship at Portland International Raceway. The 25-year-old Kentucky native will pilot the team's No. 48 Dallara, marking his first start in the premier IndyCar feeder series since the 2024 season finale.

Abel’s return comes in the wake of a roster change for the family-run outfit. The team recently announced that Jordan Missig will sit out the remainder of the campaign following a major incident in the previous round at Nashville Superspeedway.

A Proven Winner in Portland

Portland International Raceway serves as the perfect backdrop for Abel's unexpected return. The 1.964-mile, 12-turn natural road course was the site of his most recent Indy NXT victory during his highly successful 2024 vice-championship campaign. That previous success gives both Abel and his engineering crew a strong baseline setup to work with as they hit the track this weekend.

Throughout his tenure on the IndyCar ladder, Abel has established himself as one of the most consistent and formidable talents in the paddock. His resume boasts:

  • 3 race victories
  • 4 pole positions
  • 14 podium finishes

His ability to deliver results across road courses, street tracks, and ovals alike makes him a valuable asset for the team as they look to finish the season on a high note.

Hittng the Ground Running

With a highly compressed weekend schedule, Abel will have limited time to get back up to speed in the Dallara IL-15 chassis. Official practice sessions begin on Friday morning, meaning the team will have to rely heavily on Abel's familiarity with the car and his existing chemistry with the crew to find the optimal balance quickly.

Qualifying is scheduled for Saturday, ahead of the main event. Abel Motorsports heads into the weekend with high expectations, aiming to put the No. 48 car back where it belongs—fighting at the very front of the grid.
