The Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit is a purpose-built street circuit laid out through the Mandalika beach resort development on Lombok's southern coast, combining public roads with wide, permanent run-off areas rather than the tight barriers typical of most street tracks. The 4.301 km, 17-turn layout runs along the coastline with sea views from several sections, and was surfaced in Stone Mastic Asphalt, a specification later revised after aggregate issues caused a surface repair ahead of the circuit's first MotoGP race in March 2022. The track's blend of flowing, high-speed sections and tighter technical corners, combined with Lombok's heat and humidity, has made tyre management and track temperature a recurring talking point for riders and drivers since it opened.

Mandalika has hosted the MotoGP Indonesian Grand Prix every year since 2022, typically held in October, giving Indonesia its first world championship motorcycle race on home soil in decades. The circuit also hosted the World Superbike Championship from its inaugural race in November 2021 through 2023, and continues to host the Asia Road Racing Championship, Asia Talent Cup and, more recently, GT World Challenge Asia rounds.

Getting there and parking

The circuit sits about 18 km (roughly a 30-minute drive) from Zainuddin Abdul Madjid Lombok International Airport, which receives domestic flights from major Indonesian cities including Jakarta, Bali and Surabaya, plus some direct international services from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Visitors without a direct flight often connect via Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport and continue to Lombok by air or ferry.

History of Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit

A racetrack built inside a beach resort

The Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit was built as the centrepiece of the wider Mandalika Special Economic Zone, a large-scale tourism development on Lombok's southern coast run by the state-owned Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC). Unlike most street circuits threaded through existing city streets, Mandalika's roads were purpose-built with permanent, wide run-off areas from the outset, giving it FIA Grade 3 homologation while still being classed as a street circuit. President Joko Widodo formally inaugurated the venue on 12 November 2021, days before it hosted its first international race.

World Superbike first, then MotoGP

The circuit's competitive debut came with the World Superbike Championship in November 2021, alongside Asia Talent Cup support races, marking Indonesia's return to world championship motorsport after decades without a major international round. Ahead of its first MotoGP weekend in March 2022, the circuit's Stone Mastic Asphalt surface needed repair work after aggregate specification issues were identified during pre-event testing, a widely reported hurdle for the new venue. MotoGP's Indonesian Grand Prix has run at Mandalika every year since 2022, drawing large local crowds and significant government backing as a flagship event for Indonesian tourism.
