History of Morgan Park Raceway
From hill climb to national venue
The Warwick club that runs Morgan Park traces back to 1954, and its early competitive life centred on hill climbs, including the Weewondilla gravel hill climb completed in 1967, rather than a dedicated circuit. A short circuit was laid out on the current Morgan Park site and officially opened in October 1970 during a Rodeo Race Meeting, giving the Southern Downs its first permanent motor racing venue and giving the club, incorporated as the Warwick District Sporting Car Club in 1987, a long-term home.
Building out the circuit family
Rather than replacing the original layout, the club extended it repeatedly: bitumen sealing and a stretch to 1.2 kilometres came through the 1990s, a 2.1-kilometre configuration followed in 2002, and pit garages, a race control tower and modern timing systems were added between 2000 and 2004 to coincide with the club's 50th anniversary.
