Circuit Zolder is a compact, tree-lined circuit cut through pine forest in the Limburg sand belt, a layout that has been shortened and reshaped several times since 1963 for safety reasons, most significantly after Gilles Villeneuve's fatal 1982 crash. The current Grand Prix layout is a twisty, technical 4.011 km lap with a mix of medium-speed corners and few long straights, which rewards precise car placement over outright power and makes it a popular circuit for national touring car and GT racing as well as karting and motorcycle events.

Circuit Zolder hosted the Belgian Grand Prix ten times between 1973 and 1984, but is remembered above all for Gilles Villeneuve's fatal crash during 1982 qualifying, after which F1 never returned. Getting there and parking

Circuit Zolder sits in Limburg province near Hasselt and Genk, close to the Dutch border. There is no direct rail line to the circuit; the nearest station is Heusden-Zolder or Hasselt, from which a taxi or bus connection is needed, and most visitors drive in via the E314 motorway. Maastricht Aachen Airport, just over the Dutch border, is the closest airport, though Brussels and Antwerp airports are also commonly used by international visitors.

Spectator guide

Zolder's compact, forested layout means most of the circuit is visible from a handful of vantage points, and the tree cover gives shade that many larger open circuits lack. Grandstands are concentrated around the start/finish straight and the tighter infield corners where overtaking is most likely.

History of Circuit Zolder

An F1 venue born of the sand-belt pine forests

Circuit Zolder opened in June 1963, carved through the pine forests of the Limburg sand belt near Heusden-Zolder, and by the 1970s had become one of two circuits (alongside Spa's old road course, and later Nivelles) sharing hosting duties for the Belgian Grand Prix. Zolder held the race ten times between 1973 and 1984, becoming Belgium's primary Formula 1 venue after the old public-road Spa circuit was dropped from the calendar.

The Villeneuve tragedy

Zolder's F1 history is dominated by one event: during qualifying for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix, Ferrari driver Gilles Villeneuve, on a fast lap while trying to beat teammate Didier Pironi's time, collided with the slower March of Jochen Mass approaching the Terlamen corner. Villeneuve's car was launched into a violent series of flips and he suffered fatal injuries. The crash prompted a period of soul-searching in F1 over track and car safety and remains one of the sport's most cited tragedies; the circuit made safety modifications in the aftermath, and Formula 1 left Zolder for good after the 1984 race.

Life after F1

Rather than fade, Zolder reinvented itself as a leading national and international club-racing venue. It twice hosted the UCI Road World Championships (1969 and 2002) and has repeatedly staged the cyclo-cross world championships, including the 2016 event notable as the first confirmed case of 'mechanical doping' (a hidden motor) in professional cycling.
