Improved Plan Needed for Yamaha MotoGP Tester

Cal Crutchlow Highlights Need for Improved Plan as Yamaha MotoGP Tester

The British rider, who returned to the Yamaha fold in 2021 after his career as a full-time rider came to an end following the 2020 season, made the remarks in the wake of his wildcard outing in last weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi.

Crutchlow’s first race outing since last year’s Valencia season finale came amid a year in which he has spent long periods on the sidelines in between his Yamaha test role and his three-race stand-in campaign for the retiring Franco Morbidelli at Petronas SRT.

Although Crutchlow had previously indicated Motegi was likely to be his final outing on the M1, he said the lack of a clear plan about his future role with Yamaha means he is open to outings in the future if required, particularly when it comes to working with young riders.

Speaking to Autosport.com, Crutchlow said, “I think there needs to be a better plan, and in life, you need a little bit of clarity. We know it’s not fully in our control, because Yamaha make decisions as well. But more communication and organization would help everyone. It’s nothing against Yamaha; it’s just making sure that we can do a good job.”

Crutchlow added that as a test rider, he would benefit from having a defined schedule to follow, allowing him to plan his training regimen and be prepared for any on-track duties that may arise.

The 35-year-old racer, who boasts three MotoGP victories to his name, expressed his willingness to continue working with Yamaha but emphasized the importance of clear communication and a concrete plan for his involvement.

Crutchlow’s desire to contribute to the development of young riders stems from his understanding of the challenges they face in their early careers. He believes his experience and expertise can be valuable in providing guidance and feedback to aspiring talents, ensuring their smooth transition into MotoGP.

With his wildcard appearance at Motegi, Crutchlow showcased his competitiveness and adaptability, never losing sight of his relentless pursuit of excellence even after transitioning to a non-competitive role.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Cal Crutchlow as a Yamaha MotoGP tester. However, one thing is certain: his dedication, professionalism, and desire to contribute to the sport’s development will continue to shine through as he navigates the next chapter of his career.
