Track map and layout
VIR sits on rolling land along the Dan River right at the Virginia/North Carolina border, and its Full Course strings together some of the most respected corners in American road racing across 3.27 miles and 17 turns with about 130 feet of elevation change. The lap opens with the fast, uphill Climbing Esses, sweeps through the tight South Bend and the tricky, blind Oak Tree turn, then rewards commitment through the Roller Coaster before the technical Hog Pen complex leads back to the front straight. VIR's modular design allows the same real estate to be reconfigured into North, South and Patriot courses of varying length and difficulty, plus longer Grand East and Grand West combinations that stitch sections together for endurance and club-racing formats, giving the venue an unusually wide range of layouts for different series and skill levels.

Events and race weekends
VIR's biggest weekend is IMSA SportsCar Championship's summer visit in August, run alongside a MotoAmerica superbike round the same month, making late summer the track's marquee period. Trans-Am Series returns in September, and SCCA runs a Super Tour national event in spring. Getting there and parking
VIR is set in rural south-central Virginia about 12 miles east of Danville, right on the North Carolina line. There is no large commercial airport nearby; most visitors fly into Piedmont Triad International near Greensboro or Raleigh-Durham and drive roughly 75-90 minutes, or use general aviation options closer to the track.

History of Virginia International Raceway (VIR)
Origins and closure
Virginia International Raceway opened on August 3, 1957, built by a group of enthusiasts using little more than a bulldozer to shape the rolling farmland along the Dan River. The inaugural race was won by Carroll Shelby driving a Maserati 450S, and the track quickly built a reputation among East Coast road racers before financial and operational struggles led to its closure in 1974, after which the facility sat largely dormant for a quarter-century.
Revival under Nyholm and Siegel
VIR reopened in March 2000 under Harvey Siegel and Connie Nyholm, who rebuilt the business around a country-club-style membership model that funded major reinvestment in the circuit, paddock and lodging. Rather than restoring a single fixed layout, the new ownership developed VIR's modular system of interconnecting configurations, the Full, North, South, Patriot, Grand East and Grand West courses, which let the venue host everything from entry-level HPDE days to endurance racing on the same footprint. On-site lodging additions, including The Lodge, Pit Lane Suites and The Villas, made VIR one of the only major American road courses where visitors can stay inside the facility itself.

Today VIR is a fixture on the IMSA SportsCar Championship and Trans-Am Series calendars, hosts a MotoAmerica superbike round each summer, and remains one of the busiest HPDE and club-racing venues in the country through organizers like Chin Track Days, NASA and SCCA.
