Best Track Day Cameras

5 picks · Updated 19 October 2026

Most track day cameras fail the same way: the footage is fine, but the organiser will not let you mount the camera where you planned. Several motorcycle organisers ban helmet and body mounts, and car organisers want a solid mount plus a tether. This guide starts with five cameras that are on sale in the US on 19 October 2026 and then sets out what real organisers publish about cameras.

All five picks are spec-checked. Specs come from the brands' own pages, and prices come from US retailer pages named on each pick. Brand stores showed Australian prices when we fetched them, so the three consumer cameras are priced from Target listings and may differ from the maker's own US price. None of the five reached our bar of five or more readable owner reports, so none is labelled owner-reported.

Two cameras you might expect are missing. AiM's SmartyCam 3 has been replaced by the SmartyCam 4 Corsa, which is the AiM pick below. No Racelogic VBOX Video HD3 turned up, and the current HD2 sits behind Racelogic pages that blocked automated access, with no US price found.

We can’t test everything, so each pick is labelled with where the evidence comes from. How we research and test. Some links may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you (disclosure).

GPS
25 Hz
Screen
3.0 in color touchscreen, shows lap timing during sessions
Audio
Real-time spoken coaching over Bluetooth to earbuds or the car stereo
Mount
Windshield, forward facing and centered; adhesive and magnetic mounts included
Power
Internal battery, Garmin recommends constant 12 V
In the box
32 GB card, 4 m power cable, USB-C cable, dual USB car adapter
Best for
Drivers who want lap coaching and video from one unit, with no wiring to a logger.
Worth knowing
The video overlay uses GPS but not OBD data, so throttle and steering angle are not available. It is windshield-mounted, so it suits cars only. Saving and backing up laps and video needs a Garmin Vault subscription, and BimmerWorld says it is not for autocross.

Audio
Wind-noise reduction (two strengths), voice enhancement, stereo and 360 audio modes
Best for
Drivers who want a single in-car camera that captures everything, and who accept editing the footage afterward.
Worth knowing
Some organisers restrict extension sticks: Precision Track Day does not permit Insta360 sticks anywhere. Its 40 C limit is the lowest of the cameras here.

How to choose

Check your organiser's camera rules first

Camera rules vary by organiser, by track and sometimes by event. Read your organiser's current rulebook and event paperwork before you buy a mount. These are the camera rules the organisers had published as of 19 October 2026.

Cars. NASA NorCal's HPDE acceptance package (2024) says "All cameras must be firmly and safely mounted to the car, no holding of phones." The same document says it may change from event to event. Track Night in America's event page for New Jersey Motorsports Park says on-board cameras must be tethered. MSV Trackdays in the UK allows recording equipment attached to the car with mounts designed for that purpose, requires a secondary fixing such as a tether on suction or adhesive mounts, and can refuse equipment it thinks is unsafe. Hooked on Driving's FAQ and Chin Track Days' tips page set no camera rules we could find, so ask your regional organiser.

Motorcycles. MSV's bike rules say cameras "must not be affixed anywhere to the rider" or on the bike where the rider's vision or attention could be impaired, and must be fixed with a purpose-built mount, either a suction or adhesive mount with a tether or bolted. AHRMA's track day rules say any camera on the machine must be tethered and no cameras are allowed on helmets. Sportbike Track Time (STT) says helmet-mounted cameras are not allowed at all on track, bike cameras need a tether, and stick mounts must keep the camera within 3 inches of the mounting point.

Precision Track Day shows two answers. Its policies page says nothing gets strapped to your helmet, chest or body, and no Insta-sticks. Its motorcycle requirements page lists helmet and body cameras as allowed if tethered and passed at tech, and Insta360 sticks as not permitted anywhere. That is a good reason to ask before the day. We could not find camera rules for N2 Track Days or Trackdaz.

Helmet, bike or car mount

For cars, a solid mount with a tether is the usual way to meet the rules above, and a windshield mount suits Catalyst-style units. For motorcycles, bike mounts are the only option at several organisers. MSV bans metal tank mount brackets and extension arms.

If you plan a helmet mount, confirm it in writing with your organiser first. Several organisers ban it outright. Precision Track Day's requirements page is the one we read that allows it, with a tether and a tech inspection.

Data overlays

A data overlay burns speed, RPM, gear and lap time into the video. The AiM SmartyCam 4 Corsa reads these from AiM loggers and ECU data streams, and can show throttle, temperatures and pressures. GoPro's HERO13 Black page lists GPS and data overlay. The Garmin Catalyst 2 overlays GPS data only, so no OBD values. No data overlay is listed on the DJI or Insta360 pages we read.

Battery life and heat

Quoted runtimes are lab figures. GoPro rates the HERO13 Black at over 1.5 hours at 4K30 and 5.3K30. DJI quotes 240 minutes in test conditions and lab runtimes of 167 minutes at -20 C and 190 minutes at 45 C. Insta360 quotes 208 minutes in 5.7K endurance mode. The AiM camera and the Garmin are meant to run on vehicle power, with Garmin recommending constant 12 V.

Makers' operating ranges are -20 C to 45 C for the DJI, -20 C to 40 C for the Insta360 X5 and -10 C to +50 C for the AiM. GoPro did not list one on the pages we read. A dark cabin or roll cage in summer sun can get hot, so carry a spare battery, park out of direct sun and let the camera cool between sessions.

Audio

Wind and engine noise ruin most track audio. DJI lists a three-mic array with wind-noise reduction, and Insta360 lists two wind-noise reduction strengths plus 360 audio. The Garmin Catalyst 2 uses audio for coaching, sent to earbuds or the car stereo. AiM's page does not list audio features. If you want clear commentary, record it separately through an intercom or a dedicated mic and sync it in editing.

Questions buyers ask

Can I use a GoPro at a track day?+

Usually yes on a car or bike mount, but rules vary. NASA NorCal requires cameras firmly mounted to the car, STT and AHRMA ban helmet cameras, and MSV does not allow cameras on the rider. Check your organiser's current rulebook.

Do I need a tether?+

Often. MSV requires one with suction or adhesive mounts, STT and AHRMA require one for bike cameras, and Track Night in America's New Jersey Motorsports Park page says on-board cameras must be tethered.

Can I film with my phone?+

NASA NorCal's acceptance package says cameras must be firmly mounted to the car and "no holding of phones." Whether an organiser accepts a mounted phone is for them to say, so ask before the day.

Which cameras show speed and RPM on the video?+

The AiM SmartyCam 4 Corsa can overlay ECU data such as RPM, gear and throttle. The Garmin Catalyst 2 overlays GPS data, and GoPro lists GPS and data overlay for the HERO13 Black. OBD data is not available on the Catalyst.

Why is the AiM SmartyCam 3 not listed?+

AiM now lists the SmartyCam 4 Corsa as its current camera. One US retailer's SmartyCam 3 Sport listing showed as unavailable on 19 October.

Are 360 cameras allowed?+

It depends. Precision Track Day does not permit Insta360 sticks anywhere, and STT limits stick mounts to 3 inches from the mounting point. No car organiser rule that names 360 cameras turned up, so ask yours.

Will my camera overheat?+

It can. Makers list operating ranges of -20 C to 45 C for the DJI Osmo Action 6 and -10 C to +50 C for the AiM.
