Rear stand types: spool, pad and single-sided

A spool stand lifts a bike by small bobbins (spools) screwed into the swingarm. Spools give the stand a fixed, rounded point to hold, which Sportbike Track Gear's stand guide calls the most secure way to lift. Spools are a small extra cost (Pit Bull lists spool kits at $21.95), and the right thread size depends on the bike. Pit Bull sells 6 mm, 8 mm and 10 mm kits.

A pad stand holds the swingarm itself with rubber pads. It suits bikes that cannot take spools. Pit Bull's SS stand has top supports that flip over to suit either style. Woodcraft's uprights swap between spool, pad and superbike-lifter versions, with adapters sold separately. Check this before you buy, because the stand will otherwise only suit one setup.

A single-sided swingarm needs a stand with a pin that fits the rear axle hub. Hub sizes differ by bike, so you need the pin that matches yours. Pit Bull and Woodcraft both list a range of pin sizes.

Front stands: under-fork or headlift

An under-fork stand (forklift) lifts from the bottom of the fork legs. It works on almost any bike, and it leaves the steering head free, but its pads can sit near ABS sensors and calipers. Pit Bull says some ABS bikes need separate swivels, and Woodcraft's retailer says ABS bikes may have lifting issues, so read the fitment notes for your model.

A headlift stand lifts from a hole in the underside of the lower triple clamp using a pin. It keeps everything around the front wheel clear, which many racers prefer for wheel and brake work. It only works if your bike has the hole, and you need the correct pin. Some stands convert between the two styles: Pit Bull's Hybrid Forklift takes a $109.95 converter.

Most riders use the rear stand first, then raise the front with a front stand. Follow the stand maker's instructions for lifting order and for any limits on your bike.

Adjustable height and why owners like it

A stand that lifts the wheel only an inch or two off the ground needs less effort and keeps the bike low and stable. Woodcraft's rear stand has 11 to 13 inch adjustable height, and Pit Bull's fixed stands are set at one height (13-1/8 inches for the spooled rear) unless you buy its Fully Adjustable version ($219.95).

Owners of fixed-height stands often say lifting a heavy bike takes real effort. Two Vortex owners said the same about their bikes. The retailer reviews we read are strongest for height-adjustable stands on this point.

Cheap stands and how to judge one

Sportbike Track Gear, which sells Pit Bull and Woodcraft, publishes a stand guide in which it bends and tears apart two unnamed low-cost stands and warns against buying them. That is a retailer's view, and it sells the brands it recommends. The owner reviews we read back up part of it: the one budget stand with nearly 20 reviews, the Vortex, had roughly one in five reviewers report a durability problem.

Practical checks that do not depend on brand: look at the welds, check the top supports sit square on the swingarm or spool, keep the stand on flat, hard ground, and read the maker's weight and fitment limits. A stand failing with the bike on it is the main risk, so inspect it before every use.

Do you need a stand for a track day?

Many track-day riders use a rear stand for tire warmers, chain care, wheel changes and checks between sessions. Whether an organiser requires one varies, and we found no single rule across organisers. Check your organiser's current rulebook and pit rules before you go.
